Message from the Principal
Kaya Carramar Families
Wanjoo to Term 3: a special welcome to our new students and families, and staff returning from leave. It has been a smooth start to the term, with all classes settled in ready for another exciting 10 weeks of learning.
Our Kindergarten classes had an exciting start to the term with their Scitech Incursion today. I have no doubt a great deal of wonder and learning took place – please see photos elsewhere.
A special thank you to our Year 5 and 6 parents for your understanding regarding the cancellation of In-Term Swimming. Whilst every effort was made to secure another venue, due to the late notification, options were limited and unfortunately, we were unable to make it work. If you have not yet done so, please contact the school regarding refund arrangements.
Our Year 1 and 2 students will get the swimming ball rolling in Week 3 followed by our Year 3 & 4 in Weeks 7 & 8. If you have not yet secured payment or provided details of your child’s swimming level, please contact the office.
Thank you to all parents and carers for speaking to your children about all aspects of personal safety, including online (computers and phones), awareness of strangers, and safe road practices, both as a pedestrian and / or cyclist. Regular check-ins with your children on these matters are particularly important.
The recent event in our southern suburbs is a timely reminder to speak with your children about engaging with and or entering vehicles of strangers. If you have not already done so, please speak to your children about strategies to use if they are approached by a stranger.
Similarly, it is vital that we maintain support of our children with their use of mobile phones and all online behaviour. If your child needs a phone to keep in contact with you, please consider the need for that phone to have internet access. If your child’s phone does have internet access, please consider the appropriateness of the Apps they are using and remind them of the importance of acceptable phone etiquette when engaging in online conversations, especially with their peers. Words can be very hurtful and have long lasting effects. Often out-of-hours online conflicts spill over into school time and have a significant impact on students’ relationships and capacity to focus on their learning. Staff will continue to support all students in such circumstances, and we ask parents to support us by monitoring their children’s online behaviour and teach them essential cyber life skills. The ESafety Website: https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents has a wealth of information and resources.
Thanks also for continuing to model good road use practices: assisting your children to cross the road carefully, entering/exiting the vehicle on the curb side, adhering to speed regulations, and always parking in accordance with the signage. We are a large school and at the beginning and end of the day there is a large presence of people and cars in a short space of time. The City of Wanneroo Rangers and our local traffic police provide valuable support to keep everyone safe, by closely monitoring speed and parking behaviour, especially illegal parking on the verge areas of Houghton Drive and Millendon Street. Thank you for your ongoing support and considering the safety of all members of our school community.
PLANNING FOR 2024: Whilst we may be only half-way through the year, we have now begun planning for 2024. Our enrolments determine our budget and staffing. As such, it is vital that the information we have is accurate. Please keep a lookout for a quick survey regarding where your children will be in 2024. We thank you in advance for assisting us with our planning.
Our Year 3 and Year 5 students will be taking their 2023 NAPLAN Student Report home today. There are some changes to the way in which the report is presented. Commencing this year, four Proficiency Standards (Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs additional Support) will replace the previous numerical reporting bands and minimum standards. The Proficiency Standards provide clear information on the students' achievement, based on the level expected at the time of the NAPLAN testing. Thank you for checking your child's bag and taking time to read through the Report with your child. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher.
In closing I would like to say a big thankyou to Ms Delcaro for her Leadership, and to all members of the Admin Team and front office for their support during my recent absence.
Have a wonderful fortnight.

Early Childhood Chatter
Welcome back, Carramar families.
It is wonderful to see that the children have settled down really quickly into the routines of the classroom and school.
Can I please remind our Kindy parents that Pre-primary enrolments for 2024 Pre-primary places are due. If you have not already done so, please complete the enrolment forms that can be found on our website or are available in hard copy at the front office. (Kindy enrolments 2024 are also due).
Visible Learning in the Early Childhood Classroom
Carramar Primary School is a Visible Learning school. What is meant by visible learning? What does visible learning look like in the early childhood classroom?
‘In this classroom everyone is a student everyone is a teacher’
Visible learning occurs when teachers help their students to become their own teachers. The skill of thinking and learning is explicitly taught. You may have seen the Busy Ant Posters which describe the traits of an excellent learner (I am a thinker, I am a problem solver, I am a communicator, and I am an action taker). Teachers showcase what children have learnt and how they have learnt it, valuing the process as much or often more than the end result. Children are given learning goals and teachers give regular feedback on these goals and each student’s individual learning.
Learning intentions are the knowledge and/or skills that will be taught in the lesson. Teachers ensure that their students know what the children will be learning. It describes what the children need to know, understand and be able to do by the end of one or more lessons. In early childhood, these are very short and to the point, for example, today we are learning to identify the difference between a letter and a word, we are learning to clap the syllables in a word, we are learning to count backwards from 10 etc.
Success criteria are the measures that we use to determine whether children have met the learning intentions and how well they have met them. It informs both the teacher and the students. In other words, it describes what success should look like. For example, I can show my teacher a letter or a word on a page, I can clap the syllables in any word that my teacher says, I can count backwards starting from 10 and ending with zero.

Winter Carnival in Term 2
In the final weeks of Term 2 on the 29th of June Carramar’s Year 6 Students attended the Winter Carnival competing in a range of cold season sports. In soccer, both our Boys 1 Team and Girls 1 team secured first-place positions, showcasing their exceptional skills and sportsmanship. Congratulations to them and the other soccer teams! Additionally, Faith and Gracie from Year 6 achieved a fantastic second-place finish in lawn bowls, demonstrating precision and composure. Well done to our Mod cross and Netball teams who competed well throughout the day with Netball Team 1 and 3 finding more success for Carramar with top 4 rankings. The weather throughout these events was fantastic, adding to the overall enjoyment. Well done to all students on the day, great effort!
