Issue 1 2024
Message from the Principal
Kaya Carramar Families
Our start to the 2024 school year has been fantastic, even with that amazing weather of last week!
It was wonderful to have all year levels from Kindergarten to Year 6 starting on the same day and seeing all classes settled by 9.00am. It was very exciting to welcome our very first set of triplets to Carramar Primary. All the students looked fantastic in their school uniforms and have been very engaged in all aspects of their learning, be that in the classroom or in the playground. I have enjoyed meeting many of our new children and new families and look forward to getting to know you all as the year unfolds.
We were certainly reminded that the Bunuru season, which commenced on Thursday 1st February, is the hottest time of the year – well done to everyone for coping and staying well hydrated. It is nice to be enjoying some respite, however we do have some more hot days forecast for later this week, and thereafter.
The focus at our recent School Development was to “Review and Refine our practices and work together to take our school from being a Good School to a Great School”. Our discussions centred on the importance of consistent whole school practices, especially those relating to Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and engaging in Cooperative Learning Practices. We also reviewed our student survey information: What Goes on at Carramar, which tells us how safe the children feel at school, what behaviours they observe from their peers and strategies to use to ensure staff are aware of any concerns they have.
With our previous School Business Plan coming to completion at the end of 2023, we also began work on our Business Plan for the next three-year cycle. The discussions that took place bode well for some very exciting times ahead. We look forward to sharing updates in coming weeks.
At our cohort Mini Assemblies last Friday all classes discussed how we can support each other to achieve our School Expectations and work together cooperatively to be Carramar Stars. It has been most pleasing to see our students being Respectful, Responsible and Safe Learners. We look forward to seeing our Expectations being demonstrated each, and every day by our whole school community and working in partnership with our families to ensure this occurs, especially in the way we engage with each other. Thank you in advance for supporting us to be the Great School that we know we can be.
Today is Safer Internet Day, a global initiative to raise awareness of online safety issues. Whilst our staff continue to educate our students about online safety risks, like online abuse, how to be safe online and where to go for help, it is vital that we work together to support our children.
The statistics for our children are quite concerning. The tables below show the increase in concern from 2023 – 2024:
Unfortunately, an incident during the recent holidays, whereby a number of Carramar Primary staff and students were implicated in an illegal account created on a particular platform, further highlights these concerns. The matter has been reported to the eSafety Commissioner and police, and is currently under investigation. Sadly, current and past students were involved.
Misuse of the school logo; misuse of personal images; extremely disrespectful comments and sexualised recordings formed part of the concern. I am very grateful to all parents who I have spoken to who have acted promptly and engaged with their children to have the matter attended to.
I strongly encourage all parents to check in daily so that you Connect, Reflect and Protect your children to ensure they are engaging in safe and respectful online behaviour. Hopefully we can make every day a Safer Internet Day.
Connect safely by keeping apps and devices secure and reviewing your privacy settings regularly.
Reflect on how your actions online may affect others or your safety.
Protect yourself and others by visiting https://www.esafety.gov.au/ to find out how to stay safe online and report online abuse.
Please be reminded of the importance of modelling safe road practices and keeping all members of our community safe. This includes not walking children through the Admin carpark from Houghton Drive at the start of the day. Whilst our pedestrian gate is being fixed, we ask that you please use the Millendon St gate or the OSH entrance.
Thank you also for adhering to the speed limit, for parking in the correct place and having your children exit the car on the curb side. The local rangers patrol the area regularly and sometimes unwanted mail relating to parking is received.
It is wonderful to have our Traffic Warden, Noel, back with us again this year. We are very grateful for the work Noel does every morning and afternoon assisting our families to get to school safely. Thank you for encouraging your children to make safe choices and to be respectful to Noel, as they cross the road at the Millendon crossing each day.
Our Canteen will begin operations tomorrow. Thank you to Vince and Gabriella, and their team for providing many yummy healthy foods.
Please note days of operation will be Wednesday – Friday.
I look forward to seeing many of you this afternoon at our K-2 Parent Information Sessions and again Wednesday at our Year 4 – 6 Parent Information Sessions. The sessions will begin at 4.00pm sharp. I do hope you are able to attend as these sessions provide a great opportunity for you to meet your child’s teacher/s, if you have not yet had the chance to do so, and provide an insight into our whole school Expectations, classroom and school routines. If you are unable to attend the session, please advise your child’s teacher.
Our Term 1 Staff Structure and School Day structure has been included in this newsletter. Thank you for ensuring your children arrive promptly, with the first lessons starting at 8.40am.
Please do not hesitate to contact the office if you have any queries.
Have a wonderful fortnight. Thank you for your ongoing support.
