Message from the Principal
Kaya Carramar families
Congratulations to our 2024 Student Leadership Team: Student Ministers; City of Wanneroo (CoW) Leaders, Faction Leaders and Technicians. I must commend all students who nominated for Leadership positions, especially those who presented speeches, possibly the highest calibre of leadership speeches I have heard. This bodes well for a very strong 2024 Student Leadership team. Our 2024 Leaders were presented to the school at the recent Faction Friday Assembly and will now “shadow” our current Student Leaders for the remainder of the school year to learn more about their roles. They will be officially presented with their badges at our Celebration Assembly on Friday 8th December. Thank you to Mrs Block for her coordination of our Student Leadership Team, our Year 5 teachers, and parents for supporting the children with the process and to Ms DelCaro, Mr Malatios, Mr Cox and Ms Malinovic and for their ongoing support.

I look forward to welcoming our 2024 Kindergarten parents to the school community tomorrow, at our Kindergarten Information Session. Next week, we are very excited to meet their children, our 2024 Kindergarten students, as they begin their Pre-Kindy Transition sessions. These sessions provide a great opportunity for our new students to meet their peers and get to know a little bit about school life, whilst also providing valuable information sessions to our new parents. I know our new students and parents will benefit greatly from these opportunities. Thank you to Mrs Parker and our K and PP staff for coordinating these days.
As mentioned previously, we are finalising our planning for 2024. This includes class structures and staffing. Thank you to all who have advised us of if you ARE NOT RETURNING in 2024. Based on the anticipated student enrolments and anticipated budget, there will be some composite classes again in 2024. When constructing our classes, consideration is given to every child’s academic, social and behavioural needs. This will be no different for composite classes. Thank you to parents who have provided information about your child that may assist with their class placement for 2024. We cannot guarantee requests will be met but assure you that the information will be considered. Please be aware that the school does not consider requests for specific teachers or composite classes. The school’s organisational structure is focussed on ensuring that all students are supported and a quality educational program is delivered in every classroom.
We are seeking your feedback on how effective you believe our School Culture is. This short survey is an important part of understanding an effective school culture and the extent to which this is in place in the school. Your responses will help us understand areas where we are performing well and areas for further development. https://www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/CPS2023 The survey will be open until midnight Sunday 10th December 2023. Thank you in advance - your responses are valued.
‘Home Among the Gumtrees’, our inaugural School Performance for Years 1-5 will take place on Monday 20th November, World Children's Day, at 1.30pm in the Performing Arts Centre. Students have been learning songs and preparing backdrops during their Music, Visual Arts and Drama lessons. Thank you to Ms Malinovic and Miss Dobbs for all their preparation. Parents are welcome to attend. We look forward to seeing you there.
The forecast for Friday is perfect for doing some laps around the oval for our P&C Fundraiser: Whole school Lapathon. The event is scheduled to start at 2:00pm. Our Kindergarten and Pre-Primary children will do their laps in a marked off area in the centre of the oval and our Year 1-6 students will lap around the outer boundary of the oval. Parents are most welcome to run with their children, but for everyone’s personal safety we do request that all students remain in the area assigned to them.. Thanks in advance for all your support. See you in your running shoes.

Play & Learning
Educators in Early Childhood try to balance the explicit teaching of the curriculum with play-based learning opportunities. By learning through play, children develop an understanding of the world and how they fit into it. This has a positive influence on children’s social, physical, emotional and cognitive development and allows them to develop their imagination and creativity. As children grow and develop, the way they play changes.
Did you know that there are several different types of play-based learning?
- Unstructured, free play: Freely chosen by the child with very little adult involvement
- Investigative or guided play: Child-initiated but the teacher extends the play with talk to promote enquiry and learning through questioning and demonstrating
- Adult-led: Organised and directed by an adult and may include instructions but remains open-ended. The intentions are clear and promote high-level thinking skills
- Playing games: These have explicit rules and help children to practise specific skills and to develop their social skills
So, how can you support your child’s learning?
- Seek out different experiences both inside and outside
- Encourage your child to discover and develop at their own pace
- Relax about the messiness – clearing up is a productive part of children’s development
- Ask lots of questions (I wonder what would happen if ….? Why do you think …? Who do you think …?)
- Talk to your child about things that they are interested in
Remember, through play, your child is discovering, taking risks, problem-solving, learning to get on with others, being creative and developing self-awareness. For more information, visit education.wa.edu.au/play-based-learning

Kaya Carramar Community!
Can you believe we're in week 6 and already over halfway through Term 4!
It has been a very busy two weeks with many exciting events happening in our school.
I have had the wonderful pleasure joining all the year 5 classes (S5, S6, Rm11 & Rm12) and talking about my experiences as a Volunteer Bush Fire Fighter. The students learnt how to understand, read and navigate the Fire Danger Rating System. It is important to understand this so we can always be best prepared in case we are faced with a bushfire. I am looking forward to seeing all the year 5 families Bush Fire evacuation plans.
A big thankyou to all the Pre-Primary Carramar Stars in Room 6 for having me in their class to read ‘What a Lady Bird Heard’. It was a very fun and interactive story. The students laughed and enjoyed reading it with me. Thankyou Room 6 for having me join your story time.
The 11th of November was Remembrance Day. A day we take a moment to reflect and remember the brave men and women that served and risked their lives in many ways to protect the freedom we still enjoy the country we proudly call home.
To commemorate Remembrance Day, we had a very special guest, and a very special friend of mine, Mr Ian Storey join us at our Faction Assembly Friday the 10th of November to talk about the importance and meaning of Remembrance Day. Ian has a very knowledgeable education and experience in the Australian Defence Force. Ian proudly served in the Australian Navy for 11 years, then followed another 21 years in the Australian Army.
After the assembly the year 4,5 & 6 classrooms stayed behind and had the opportunity to ask Ian questions about Remembrance Day. They asked many great questions about his experiences, memories and hardships that he had faced during his many years of service.
Thankyou Ian for your ongoing dedication and service to our country. We thank you for coming into our school and educating us on the importance of this day. We enjoyed hearing about your experiences and having a whole new understanding of this special day we have. The students enjoyed viewing vintage items from WWI and WWII, as well as the more modern and current essential items our ADF service men and women use today.
The Chaplain’s Award went to Year 5, Room 11 this week, for the amazing effort the put into learning about how to keep safe in an event of a bushfire emergency. It was wonderful hearing all the ideas and stories of their own experiences having to evacuate because of a bush fire. I can’t wait to see all of your completed bush fire evacuation plans this week.

Triathlon
On Friday the 3rd of November a selected group of year 5 and 6’s from Carramar Primary attended the annual School Sport WA Triathlon Championships. The team of students who attended competed across 5 divisions in teams of 3 to swim, run and cycle their way to the finish line. We are incredibly proud of all our students who not only trained intensely but performed outstandingly with resilience and pride on race day, a special congratulations to our two female students Erin and Layla who also competed in Individual Aquathon races.
We are proud to announce that Carramar Primary School placed 2nd in the state competition! A school first!
The trophy cabinet also gained the following medals:
Mixed Division C Race: 3rd Place – Elizabeth, Elliot, Aiden
Female Division Team Race: 1st Place – Erin, Elizabeth, Indie
Individual Aquathon Under 12 Girls Race : 3rd Place - Erin
A great result for a great team, well done Carramar!

Constable Care Visit to Kindy
In Week 6 the Carramar Kindy classes were treated to a visit from the Constable Care Team. The long-awaited visit was well received, with all students showing excellent behaviour and engagement. The show explored a story about Timmy, Teagan, and Sarge the Dog, who are at the park enjoying a beautiful afternoon. They get butterflies in their tummies as they zoom down the slide and their hearts pound with excitement while playing chasey. They soon realise that it can be pretty fun to feel a little scared, but not always. Fun Scary looked at the difference between safe and unsafe scary feelings with Timmy and Teagan learning about their warning signs and identifying that there is always a safe person to talk to about the unsafe scary stuff.
Thanks Constable Care! We look forward to our next visit!
PE and Early Childhood team
Year 4 Police Visit
On Thursday of Week 4, we had the amazing pleasure of two police officers visit our school and visit the year four classes. The students were lucky enough to see, touch and wear some very important police accessories during the visit. The most important aspect of the visit was aimed at providing information on the students keeping safe in the community and when they are online. All the students were totally engaged, they asked very interesting questions and overall, were reminded of making sensible and safe decisions for themselves.
Year 5 Bushfire Program
Mrs Bonnie Rodman visited the year five classes this week as part of their curriculum Bushfires Program.
The students enjoyed hearing about Mrs Rodman's experiences and learnt a lot about how to be safer in the Australian Bushfire season, while out and about or when at home. The students went on to develop personalised fire safety programs for their own homes. Students also created emergency contact information sheets (for the family fridge) that could be used in the event of a fire.

Competed in a Little Athletics competition located in Joondalup last weekend. Conor came in at an inspiring secondplace overall and, right behind him, was Joshua in an incredible third place overall.
