Issue 17 2023
Message from the Principal
Kaya Carramar Families
I trust you have all had an enjoyable fortnight, and enjoyed celebrating the successes of some of our Australian sporting teams. I must confess to being glued to the television for the World Cup Cricket match on Saturday evening – what a game! I know some of you have been lucky enough to enjoy the Matildas in real life, and some very happy children have shared their experiences with me.
It is most pleasing to see our students arrive calmly each day and be ready to enter class and start their learning at 8.40am. Thank you for your support with getting the children to school on time each day. With just over 5 weeks of the school year remaining, we have much more teaching and learning, and exciting events planned.
On behalf of our staff I would like to say, “A very big thank you” to our parents, students and P & C for your wonderful messages of thanks, and an extra special thank you for the scrumptious morning tea that was prepared for World Teachers Day last Friday. We greatly appreciated it.
Thank you also for your generous support of our recent Book Fair, with over $2000 worth of purchases made. Thanks to our Library Officer, Tammy Gordon, and all staff and parents who assisted. All funds raised will go towards increasing our library resources.
Congratulations to our Jump Jammers for their amazing efforts at the recent Jump Jam Championships. You should be very proud of your achievements! Thank you to Mrs Pearce for coordinating this opportunity and to staff and parents who assisted. I’ve no doubt plans are already in the making for more Jump Jamming in 2024!
This Thursday you will see many students enjoying their learning in the great outdoors as we celebrate Outdoor Classroom Day. Learning outdoors is good for students’ health, engages them in what they are learning and leads to a greater connection with nature. With many students overly attached to screens, it’s more crucial than ever before to encourage our children to enjoy learning outdoors.
We wish all students participating in the upcoming State Triathlon on Friday and the Lego League Challenge Competition on next Friday, all the best. We know you will do yourselves proud. Thank you to Mr Malatios, Mr Cox and Mr Brits, for preparing the students for these events.
Next Wednesday afternoon we will be entertained by our Carramar’s Got Talent finalists. There is much excitement in the air and I’ve no doubt we will be very impressed by all our performers. Thank you to Mrs Block and her team of judges for their coordination of this fun-filled event.
Planning for 2024 is well underway. Information regarding where your children will be attending school in 2024 informs our budget, which in turn informs our Class Structure and Staffing. As such it is vital that we know your intentions ASAP. To accommodate enrolment numbers, and maximise human resources it will be necessary to create some composite classes, as has been done previously. Thank you for advising the school ASAP if you WILL NOT BE RETURNING next year. Your support and understanding is greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your support of our upcoming Lapathon. This year we have decided to “keep it simple”. We know it will be a great day for students and families alike. A mammoth thankyou to our P & C and their hard working team for all their efforts with all fundraising events this year. We acknowledge everyone’s personal commitments and greatly appreciate all that you do to support our school. To everyone who is able to lend a hand, we thank you and commend you for your wonderful work. We also acknowledge the financial pressures that some of our families are under. All donations/contributions, big or small, are most welcome. All funds raised contribute to resourcing many wonderful teaching and learning opportunities for your beautiful children.
In closing, if you are planning on engaging in Halloween celebrations in the community tonight, please remember to keep safe and look after yourselves and each other.
Have a wonderful fortnight.

Kaya Carramar Community!
Term 4 is in full swing and we are almost halfway through the term. It’s been interesting chatting with year 6 students about high school. Different emotions they’re all feeling knowing this is the last ever term they have in primary school. It's so lovely to see them all speaking and supporting each other with the upcoming transition to high school. Many of our year 6 students have expressed their excitement that they will be getting a brand-new iPad as this is how they communicate with teachers, upload assessments, check school emails and much more. It has sparked interesting conversation on how to stay safe in the cyber world. It has brought up conversation relating to social media, YouTube, streaming services such as Netflix and Disney Plus, online gaming as well as searching the internet in general.
Parent Educator, Presenter and Resilience Specialist, Maggie Dent has said the following and it is so true of today that “Technology can be beneficial and harmful. The tricky thing for today's parents is how to protect their children and themselves from the harmful aspects, while engaging in technology to enhance communication, education, positive entertainment and the strengthening of human relationships.” Technology can inspire creativity, provide an insight into the world around us and be a source of information. To help us in our endeavour to teach children to navigate this world wisely, there are two websites that I would recommend. The first is the eSafety Commissioner website (www.esafety.gov.au) which has sections for Kids, Young People and Parents containing videos about being safe online and advice for parents on gaming, parental controls and cyberbullying.
Another great resource for parents is YSafe! (https://ysafe.onlinesafetyhub.com.au/). With information provided by experts and guides on things such as starting out on social media, online safety guides and deep dives into every gaming and social media platform that is relevant and popular today. In these deep dives the experts provide an age recommendation, explain the apps and rate the potential risks that children (and adults) are exposed to. They also have a section dedicated to how to handle social media incidents and links to online counselling and mental health support services and websites.
The week 3 Faction Assembly Chaplain award “Respect” goes to Mrs Holden and Miss Burrows class S5 Year 5. I am so pleased to see how Respectful, compassionate and supportive you have all been to your teacher whilst Miss Burrows has stepped in. Keep up the good work year 5’s.

St John First Aid Focus Incursion
An Exciting Journey of Lifesaving Knowledge: Our Year 1 to 3 students recently were treated with a St Johns First Aid Focus incursion that took them on a thrilling adventure into the world of first aid and emergency preparedness. The sessions encompassed skills associated with recognizing emergency situations, understanding the importance of quick response and how to respond to emergencies to make a difference. Well done to all the students who were able to attend the session, we hope you enjoyed it!

On the weekend, Lewis from year 5 participated in the Pan Pacific Jui-Jitsu 2023 Competition in Melbourne. Representing his GFT Joondalup Jiu Jitsu club, he was awarded a bronze medal for his category.
Good effort Lewis, that’s very impressive!
